Jim Dicus-Graduated 1971
Like so many others who have gone through Medical Lake High School, Jim was a military transfer kid, arriving at Fairchild AFB with his family in 1969. While here for only his last two years of high school, Jim Dicus made an immediate impact and left a lasting impression.
Jim was Northeast “A” League All Conference in basketball both his junior and senior years. He was the Cardinals leading scorer and rebounder on the basketball court both years, averaging 22.9 and 20.3 points per game respectively. Jim was voted MVP in 1970 and helped lead the Cards to a league championship in 1971. Jim set a school scoring record of 40 points in 1970, which lasted for over thirty years. He also has the distinction of scoring the first two points in the new gymnasium built in the summer of 1970.
Basketball wasn’t Jim’s only athletic talent. He proved to be an outstanding track/cross country athlete as well, helping the track team win the Northeast “A” League Championship in 1970. He ran the 220 yd. dash and never lost a race until the state meet where he finished fourth (22.9 sec.). He was a District Champ in four events (220, 880 relay, 440 relay, high jump) in 1970 and went to state in all four events. Due to a severe illness his senior year in 1971, he was unable to run track which only left a feeling with many as to what might have been.
Following graduation from MLHS in 1971 Jim was awarded a basketball scholarship and played four years of college ball at both Centralia Junior College and Saint Martin’s College (1971-1976). Jim led the NW Junior College District in rebounding with a 14.5 rebound average for the 72’/73’ season. Upon completing college, Jim went to work for the government and served the Air Force community for 30 years before retiring. He felt fortunate to have a career field in sports and recreation which he excelled at most of his life. Jim’s last assignment was serving as Deputy Squadron Commander over Services at McChord AFB here in Washington.
The illness Jim suffered during high school eventually caused his kidneys to deteriorate which resulted in three transplants. Jim never let that keep him down or impact his quality of life. He attributed his ability to bounce back from adversity to the characteristics he developed from competing in athletics while in school.
Jim received numerous accolades and awards as a federal employee between 1981- 2011 which included the Meritorious Achievement and Outstanding Service Award and was a three time recipient of the MAJCOM Employee of the Year Award at Kadena AB and McChord AFB. Jim continued to add to his athletic resume by receiving gold medals at the US Transplant Games for basketball and golf in 1996 and 2000 respectively along with silver and bronze medals in 2000 for basketball and softball. Jim coached two state championship youth basketball teams in 1987 and 1989 while at Hill AFB, Utah. He volunteered countless hours teaching, coaching and running clinics for youth over a thirty year period.

MLHS Football-1968 Season-Record: 8-0-1
Following a 1- 8 season in 1967, pre-season polls for 1968 had the Medical Lake Cardinals ranked last in the Northeast "A" League. Needless to say, this didn't sit well with a small core of veteran seniors. Joining with just a handful of returning senior lettermen were nine additional seniors coupled with eighteen sophomores and juniors, playing MLHS varsity football for the first time.
The Medical Lake Cardinals worked two weeks to prepare for their opener. A great advantage implemented by Head Coach Jerry Connors and staff at the start of the season was the implementation of a two platoon system. Having twenty two starters was unheard of at the time. This, coupled with excellent conditioning allowed the Cards the luxury of being able to play into the "5th quarter". Another great asset for the team was the support provided by the community. Standing room only was the norm at all Cardinal football games. The MLHS Booster Club was very active and provided much, especially on the long road trips. The dedication of the team and the excellent coaching staff paid off as they upset Newport 13-7, to give the Grizzlies their only defeat of the season.
Even though the·cards had an impressive victory over Newport they were still taken lightly and were 14 point underdogs in their next game which pitted the Cardinals against league favorites, Deer Park. For the second time in a row the Cards pulled off another upset by trouncing Deer Park 32-13.
The Medical Lake Cardinals went on to defeat Riverside (20-6), Colville (20-0), Cheney (13-0), Chewelah (19-6), Selkirk (34-7), DeSales- Walla Walla (13-0).
In the final game of the year the Cards clinched the Northeast "A" League Conference title with a 0-0 tie with Kettle Falls. The Cardinals were selected 3rd in the final Class "A" state ratings. Eight players earned First Team All League honors.
MLHS Football-1969 Season-Record: 9-0
Coming off the heels of a spectacular season for the Cards the year before and with continued great coaching along with a new group of senior leaders, the Medical Lake Cardinals continued to fuel the fire of "Cardinal Pride". Rebuilding this team was necessary due to the departure of so many from the year before. Many questioned whether or not the Cards could repeat as Champions. The team banded together and accepted that challenge by once again earning the top spot in the Northeast "A" League, finishing with an undefeated season of 9-0.
Individual players and the team as a whole were learning that success was not solely measured by the outcome on game night, but by what they did to prepare and the road to get there. With twelve returning letterman providing leadership to twenty four first year varsity players, the team once again worked hard to achieve that "5th quarter" edge against opponents. The two platoon system along with excellent conditioning and great coaching paid off as the Cards racked up victory after victory.
Again, the season opened with a 12-0 win over Newport. The winning tradition continued with wins over Deer park (22-16), Riverside (26-0), Colville (49-14), Cheney (30-0), Chewelah (20-12), Selkirk (32-0), DeSales- Walla Walla (14-8), and Kettle Falls (24-20). Seven players earned First Team All League honors.
MLHS Football-1970 Season-Record: 9-0
Now with an established tradition to uphold, the Cardinal football team was faced with many of the same challenges experienced the year before. Twelve returning lettermen joined up with twenty new recruits to dedicate themselves to the task. A new challenge arose this year. For the first time and after two previous undefeated seasons, the Cardinals were finally being taken seriously and were considered league favorites.
Again, as in the past, senior leadership along with great coaching and conditioning paved the way as the team rose to meet all challenges. Tremendous student and community fan support played a key role in the Cardinals continued success on the field. "Cardinal Pride" was not limited to just the school. The Medical Lake community knew they had something special and on Friday nights it was quite evident.
The Cardinals once again seemed headed for a championship season. As the team prepared for the season it became apparent early on that hard work, dedication and teamwork would once again make the difference. After two years of undefeated football the Cards continued _their winning ways by defeating Omak (28-20), Kettle Falls (49-12), Deer Park (34-7), Colfax (15-14), Cheney (35-14), Newport (33-10), Chewelah (36-0), Riverside (56-28), and Colville (23-6).
