Alan Scott Gilbreth -Graduated 1964

In Medical Lake, the Gilbreth name has long embodied civil responsibility and service to the community and to our country. Alan Gilbreth is one of many Gilbreth’s who have walked that path and to have attended and played sports at MLHS as a Cardinal.

Alan was a three year varsity letterman in football, basketball, and baseball. Alan played on the 1964 Cardinal basketball team that played in the Washington State “A” basketball Tournament and received “Honorable Mention” recognition for his efforts in seeing the Cards finish 2^nd in state that year. Besides participating in sports, Alan was involved at school with the Letterman’s Club, Future Teacher of America, and the Annual Club. 

After graduation from MLHS, Alan attended Eastern Washington University, receiving a BA in finance in 1968. Following this, Alan served in the United States Army where his first assignment was a tour in Vietnam where his actions resulted in his being awarded the Bronze Star Medal. In 1973 Alan returned to EWU and completed a Master of Science in Business prior to teaching ROTC there for three years. This assignment was followed by a three year tour in Germany as a Pershing Missile Officer. Alan made a specialty change from Artillery to Contracting in 1981 and served at several posts here in the US and abroad. Alan completed his military career of 24.6 years as a Lieutenant Colonel at the Air Force Institute of Technology (AFIT) Wright Patterson AFB, OH where he was a Professor of Contracting and Chief Advisor for the Army faculty. Along with the Bronze Star from service in Vietnam, Alan was awarded the Meritorious Service Medal four times during his military service. 

After completing his military career Alan was hired in 1993 as a civilian faculty member in Contracting at AFIT, which later became Defense Acquisition University (DAU). During his time at AFIT and DAU he became a renowned expert in contract management and a university leader in development of DAU’s key contract management level III training. He served as a Professor, Department Chair, and Course Manager. Alan was also a skilled researcher, writing numerous articles that were published to great accolades across the acquisition community. He retired from civilian service in December 2009 after 16 years of service to DAU, his students, and his colleagues. During his civilian service Alan received many communication and leadership awards, culminating in his induction into the Defense Acquisition Hall of Fame. Now in 2016, Alan joins the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame.

Alan and his wife Norma were married in June 1968 and have three children and twelve grandchildren. Their goal in life is to serve the Lord in ways that honor Him.

Jim Dicus-Graduated 1971

Like so many others who have gone through Medical Lake High School, Jim was a military transfer kid, arriving at Fairchild AFB with his family in 1969. While here for only his last two years of high school, Jim Dicus made an immediate impact and left a lasting impression.

Jim was Northeast “A” League All Conference in basketball both his junior and senior years. He was the Cardinals leading scorer and rebounder on the basketball court both years, averaging 22.9 and 20.3 points per game respectively. Jim was voted MVP in 1970 and helped lead the Cards to a league championship in 1971. Jim set a school scoring record of 40 points in 1970, which lasted for over thirty years. He also has the distinction of scoring the first two points in the new gymnasium built in the summer of 1970.

Basketball wasn’t Jim’s only athletic talent. He proved to be an outstanding track/cross country athlete as well, helping the track team win the Northeast “A” League Championship in 1970. He ran the 220 yd. dash and never lost a race until the state meet where he finished fourth (22.9 sec.). He was a District Champ in four events (220, 880 relay, 440 relay, high jump) in 1970 and went to state in all four events. Due to a severe illness his senior year in 1971, he was unable to run track which only left a feeling with many as to what might have been.

Following graduation from MLHS in 1971 Jim was awarded a basketball scholarship and played four years of college ball at both Centralia Junior College and Saint Martin’s College (1971-1976). Jim led the NW Junior College District in rebounding with a 14.5 rebound average for the 72’/73’ season. Upon completing college, Jim went to work for the government and served the Air Force community for 30 years before retiring. He felt fortunate to have a career field in sports and recreation which he excelled at most of his life. Jim’s last assignment was serving as Deputy Squadron Commander over Services at McChord AFB here in Washington.

The illness Jim suffered during high school eventually caused his kidneys to deteriorate which resulted in three transplants. Jim never let that keep him down or impact his quality of life. He attributed his ability to bounce back from adversity to the characteristics he developed from competing in athletics while in school.

Jim received numerous accolades and awards as a federal employee between 1981- 2011 which included the Meritorious Achievement and Outstanding Service Award and was a three time recipient of the MAJCOM Employee of the Year Award at Kadena AB and McChord AFB. Jim continued to add to his athletic resume by receiving gold medals at the US Transplant Games for basketball and golf in 1996 and 2000 respectively along with silver and bronze medals in 2000 for basketball and softball. Jim coached two state championship youth basketball teams in 1987 and 1989 while at Hill AFB, Utah. He volunteered countless hours teaching, coaching and running clinics for youth over a thirty year period.

Jim Dicus always remembered his two years at MLHS as being two of the best years of his life and was proud to represent MLHS as a Cardinal athlete. Jim married in 1979 and at the time of his induction to the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 he and his wife are the proud parents of three great kids, all of whom played high school sports and are college graduates.

Troy Clute-Graduated 1986

Graduating from Medical Lake High School in 1986, Troy Clute was a three sport standout athlete and team leader. Along with participating in athletics, Troy involved himself in other school activities as well, such as band, ASB Student Council, and as a member of the National Honor Society.

Troy was Team Captain of the Cardinal basketball team both his junior and senior years and also served as Team Captain for the football team as a senior. He garnered 1^st Team All Conference honors in basketball and baseball his senior year along with being 1^st Team All Conference both offensively and defensively that same year in football coupled with being named Northeast “A” League “Back of the Year”.

After graduating from high school, Troy went on to play football at Spokane Falls Community College for two years and then at Central Washington University for one year. Ending his football career, Troy transferred to Eastern Washington University where he earned his Bachelor of Arts Degree.

In 1997 Troy went into Mortgage Banking, holding several positions including: Salesman, Branch Manager, Area Manager covering five states with such companies as GMAC Mortgage, Countrywide Home Loans, Bank of America, and in 2016 was the Real Estate Manager for Mountain West Bank in Spokane, overseeing the Real Estate Production Team.

 It was while attending EWU that Troy met and married his wife Karri. At the time of his induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2016 they have been married for 26 years and have two children, Kellen and Kennadie, both accomplished college athletes in their own right.

INDUCTEES 2015

Carl Liggins - Class of 1965 

While in high school, Carl kept busy. Besides being an excellent four sport letter winner at MLHS, Carl managed  to handle the responsibilities of being Junior Class Representative to Boy's State, holding the offices of Senior Class President, Student Council Treasurer, and Letterman's Club Secretary/Treasurer. Carl was a member of the 1964 Cardinal basketball  team that placed 2nd in the State Tournament. Some say his best sport was track where he set school records in the 100 yard dash, 220 yard dash, 180 yard low hurdles, and a member of the record holding 880 yard relay team. At the State Track Meet in 1965, Carl set a new school record for the 100 yard dash with a time of 10 sec. flat, and placed 2"d in the long jump and low hurdles.

Following high school, Carl enrolled at WSU and ran track for the legendary Jack Mooberry. After walking on to the WSU football team in the spring of 1967, Carl earned a scholarship that summer to continue playing for the Cougars. Carl left WSU early and moved to Seattle where he gained employment with the IBM Corp. That too was short· lived, as he was drafted in 1968 into the US Army and served in Germany. Upon his release from the military in 1970, Carl returned to Pullman and WSU. In 1973, Carl returned to Spokane and settled down, working for a myriad of technical and challenging jobs. At the time of Carl's induction  into the Hall of Fame in 2015, Carl is working as an AudioNideo Technician at the Northern Quest Resort and Casino. Carl is a proud father and grandfather with two sons and a daughter along with six grandsons.

In high school, Carl was always known to be a hard worker with a great attitude. He's always been humble about his athletic and life accomplishments, seemingly always to praise the efforts of others around him before himself. Carl has endeavored  to live his life with honesty, integrity, and humility, while instilling those qualities in his children and their children.

David Southwick - Class of 1974

A stellar athlete in high school, Dave Southwick was a four year letterman in track and a three year letterman in football and wrestling. He started on both sides of the football as a sophomore for the Cardinal team that captured both the Northeast 'A' League Championship and District Championship.

The track team that year was both 'A' League Champions and Northeast 'A' League Champions. As a junior, Dave was awarded the "Coaches Award" in wrestling and was Team Captain of the Northeast 'A' and District 'A' championship Cardinal track team.

The MLHS Cardinals stepped up to the 'AA' Frontier League in 1973. Dave relished the challenge, making giant leaps of his own during his senior year. Numerous awards and accolades were bestowed on Dave for his football prowess his senior year, culminating with recognition in the national publication of "Who's Who in National High School Football". Dave set a new MLHS single game rushing yardage record of 281 yards against then undefeated West Valley, prompting their coach to proclaim, "Southwick is without a doubt the best high school back I've seen." Numerous additional awards came his way for his participation in wrestling and track. That spring, Dave set two MLHS records in the long and triple jumps. At graduation, Dave received the Scholastic Excellence Aw_ard and Outstanding Senior Athlete Award.

Following graduation from MLHS Dave began employment with the State of Washington here in Medical Lake. In 1982 he transferred over to western Washington for more advancement opportunities. He retired in 2004 from the Department of Corrections as an Interstate Extradition Lieutenant. In 1984 he married his wife Jolyn. They have two married daughters and three grandchildren. In 2010 he and his wife started a successful small business. At the time of Dave's induction in 2015 into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame Dave is working for Senate Security in our state's capital during the legislative session. When the legislature is out in the spring, summer and fall, Dave enjoys golfing, racquetball, building and flying radio controlled aircraft, RV-ing, and salt water fishing.

Don Gallo - Class of 1986

While in high school, Don Gallo participated in football, basketball, and baseball. During his senior year the Cardinal football team made the playoffs having their first winning season in eleven,years. That same year, after winning the league basketball title and subsequent playoffs, the Cardinals took their 17-6 record to the Tacoma Dome for a berth in the State 'A' Tournament. After winning their first two games against tough opponents, their lack of height became evident as they dropped the next two and finished with a very respectable 6th place finish. In the spring of 1986 Don was a member of the Cardinal baseball squad that had been rated 2nd in the state, being undefeated during their regular season of play.

 After graduating from MLHS, Don enlisted in the US Navy to protect our country's freedom and pursue the challenge of becoming Navy SEAL. He was selected and completed BUDS/S (Basic Underwater Demolition I Seal training with Class 147 in 1987). After BUD/She went to SEAL Team Two from 1987-1993 and then to the Naval Special Warfare Development Group (DEVGRU) from 1993-2007. During his 21 year career as a SEAL he completed multiple deployments around the world. Amongst his many duties, he served as a SEAL Platoon Operator, SEAL Scout Sniper Instructor, Mountain & Arctic Warfare Instructor, Advanced SEAL Tactics Instructor, SEAL Assault Team Operator, Assault Team Sniper, Military Freefall Jump Master, Communications Department Head, and had various other Naval Special Warfare qualifications.

During the end of his career, Don used his leadership and operational expertise to design and develop the latest operational equipment and soldier survival· systems to enhance the Navy SEALS and other Special Operations Forces war fighting capabilities. As Survival Systems Program Manager he was responsible for the development, testing, procurement and fielding of the latest in material and technology solutions.

Don Gallo's service decorations include: the Bronze Star, Defense Meritorious Service Medal, Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medals, Navy Achievement Award, Combat Action Ribbon, Presidential Unit Citation and various other campaign and unit awards.

After retiring in 2007, Don continued to stay involved by supporting those who continue to serve in harm's way by working directly with the users to design and manufacture the best tactical gear for our military and law enforcement professionals through his work at Eagle Industries.

At the time of Dan's induction into Hall of Fame in 2015 he and his wife Linda have been married for twenty years and are blessed with two beautiful children, Nicholas and Ava.

Jackie McCall-Class of 2002

Jackie McCall participated in soccer, basketball and track during all four years while at MLHS. She earned a varsity letter in soccer and track each of those years and added another for basketball her senior year. She excelled at playing soccer, earning All-League honors as a forward for three consecutive years along with also being named Team MVP and leading scorer for the team those same years. Jackie was a sophomore class officer, member of the Key Club and also was involved with the schools JROTC. She was named Senior Athlete of the Year in 2002 and received the US Army Reserve National Athlete I Scholarship Award upon graduation.

Jackie attended college at Western Washington University from 2002-2006 where she competed and lettered in Track and Field all four years. Her main event was the Heptathlon and the individual events associated with it at regular track meets (100m hurdles, 200m, 800m, high jump, long jump, shot put, and javelin): She also ran the 400m dash and the 1600m relay. While at WWU, Jackie set indoor track records for the 800m run and the 4x400 relay. Her hard work earned her a spot on the Great Northwest Athletic Conference All-Academic Team. Jackie graduated from Western in 2006 with a degree in recreation.

After graduating from college, Jackie worked as a coach for high school track and field as well as being a coach for Paralympics track and wheelchair basketball for several years.

At the time of her induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2015, Jackie provides recreational opportunities for people with physical and developmental disabilities and works as a Recreation and Athletics Specialist for a state run facility housing people with disabilities. She was a volunteer firefighter for four years at Orting Valley Fire and Rescue and was commander of her fire academy, earning the Chiefs Company Award upon graduation.                                                                 .

She continued on as an athlete, playing for a semi-professional women's football team, the Seattle Majestic for many years. She played defensive corner, wide receiver, kick returner and kicker. In 2011 she w.as a member of the Majestic team that won the national championship against the New England Intensity. She also had the honor of representing the Majestic on three different all-star teams alongside female football players from across the country.

 INDUCTEES 2014 

John Higgins-Class 1966

As a typical small town kid growing up in Medical Lake during the early 60's, John found friends, adventures, and a great close knit community easy to find. At MLHS, John played football, basketball and baseball. His senior year he was named Defensive Back of the Year for the Cards. He involved himself in other school activities as well, being a member of the Audio Visual Club, Letterman's Club and Chorus. John joined the US Army ·upon graduation from high school in 1966 and following basic training at Ft. Benning, Georgia was shipped off to the war in Viet Nam. After his tour of duty was over he returned to VietNam a second time at the height of the war during the Tet offensive in 1968. In 1969 John left the army and returned home to Medical Lake where he began working for the State of Washington beginning at Lakeland Village and then Eastern State Hospital until 1993. During that time John attended Ft. Wright College and Eastern Washington University.

In 1991 John began his coaching career as an Assistant Baseball Coach at MLHS and in 1992 became the Head Girls Softball Coach. He stayed in that position for the next twenty years. He coached girls basketball and volleyball along with assisting with the Cardinal football team at MLHS. He also coached volleyball at the M.L Middle School. John worked in the Special Education Department at MLHS for nine years.

In 2005 John Higgins was elected Mayor of Medical Lake and at the time of his induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 he was continuing his service to the community and citizens of Medical Lake as their Mayor, working to maintain the friendly close knit community that he knew as a kid.

John was blessed with five children, all of whom attended Medical Lake schools. Added joys are his nine grandkids and of course, "A great wife (Carrie) as all coach's wives are."

Wayne Terry-Class of 1968

While in high school, Wayne played football, wrestled, and ran track. He was a member of the Drama Club and served as the Annual Editor his senior year. As a senior he was voted "Most Valuable" on the track team. Wayne represented MLHS and placed seventh at the state track meet that year in the long jump. In PE class,Wayne broke the long standing sustained push up record with a count of 89. Far greater accomplishments and a strong community impact awaited as Wayne began his post high school path in life.

Following his graduation from MLHS, Wayne enlisted in the Army National Guard and after two years transferred to the Washington Air National Guard where he served for an additional 37 years, earning numerous awards - two of which were the First Sgt. of the year for the state of Washington in 2002 and the Outstanding Senior N.C.O. of the year for the 141st Air refueling Wing in 2004. At the time of his induction in 2014 Wayne was the only Guardsman to have ever received the Senior Master Sgt. and Chief Master Sgt. Ranks by Exceptional Personnel Promotion. In addition to serving in the military, Wayne owned and operated his own business, Whitewater Construction, Inc. coupled with directing and coaching the Mat Maulers Wrestling Club in Medical Lake for 32 years. In addition, Wayne founded the Jason Crawford Memorial Tournament which is certified as the world's largest one day wrestling tournament by the Guiness Book of World Records.

Wayne Terry's dedication and work with kids in the state of Washington earned him the Citation of Merit Award - by the State of Washington Park and Recreation Dept. for outstanding contributions and continuous service in 1999, an award presented only once annually. In 1986 Wayne was a co-founder and helped in the in the start of the "Washington Little Guys Wrestling League" which grew from an initial 5 teams and 150 kids to 73 teams and 3557 kids in 2014. Because of his work with the Mat Maulers Wrestling Club, Wayne was selected to carry the Olympic Torch in Spokane for the Salt Lake City Winter Olympics. In 1996 Wayne was the venue chairman for the Olympic Wrestling Trials in Spokane and served in that same capacity for the World Cup Wrestling Finals in 1999 and 2002.

At the time of Wayne's induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 Wayne was continuing his mentoring work with youth not only with Mat Maulers but also as a strong inspirational speaker. He positively affected the lives of countless young boys and families. He has always been an inspiration to those around him and has influenced many through his public speaking. He has been a guest speaker for a myriad of organizations including schools, hospitals, clubs and professional organizations, instilling a sense of self worth and patriotism. The Medical Lake community is fortunate to have Wayne Terry and has benefitted greatly from his generous contributions and countless hours of giving to others. 

Crystal Protzman (Appia)-Class of 1981

A very active student in high school, Crystal participated in Drill Team, Future Homemakers of America, Future Business Leaders of America, concert choir, cross country, basketball, and ran track all four years.

Upon graduation from MLHS, Crystal attended Clackamas Community College where she ran cross country and participated in several indoor track meets. After a year she returned home to Medical Lake to reflect on what direction she wanted to go after leaving school. Crystal took her father's advice and began volunteering at Sacred Heart Hospital in order to help build some work ethics and gain experience so she could enter the job market. Crystal's first job was in retail sales in 1983. She rose quickly to Store Manager and in four years became a manager at a major retail outlet. After a year she moved to Seattle to begin a new life journey with her future husband, Michael. Crystal found Seattle a bit overwhelming at first but soon found employment with McDonald-Klein Business Machines. She worked in the Service Dept. taking calls for the technicians. In 1990 Crystal accepted a position in the corporate office of R&D Industries who were a distributor for Hewlett Packard. During her ten years with R&D she ran the Purchasing Department, handled Customer Service, and was Personal Assistant to one of the owners in the Operational Division. After twelve years working in an office environment, Crystal was itching to get back into sports. After encouragement from her personal trainer and her husband she became a Personal Trainer herself with 24 Hour Fitness. Finding success in this field prompted Crystal to open her own personal studio in her home where she enjoyed working for the next seven years. In 2007, with Crystal's support, Michael was able to start their own company, Eclipse Demolition, a field that Michael knew well. Crystal managed the office and occasionally ran the crews. Her life at that time was working hand in hand with her husband.

At the time of Crystal's induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014 she and Michael had been together for thirty years, married for twenty. They have two children, Chanel and Chandler and two grandchildren, Nivaeh and Landon. Crystal loves being a mother and "Nana" to the loves of her life. Not sure what might be in store for her in the second half of her life, she was still looking forward to it. Perhaps a second chance with the Masters Track and Field.

Tricia Nilles-Class of 1988

Tricia played varsity basketball three years and volleyball for two while attending Medical Lake High School. During her junior year she was a member of the girls basketball team that qualified for the state tournament. She was named to the All State Team that year as well. Tricia was All League in basketball her junior and senior years. She was also a member of the National Honor Society her senior year.

Following graduation from MLHS, Tricia attended Spokane Falls Community College where she played basketball for two years, gaining admittance into the SFCC Hall of Fame this past year. She received her BA from Eastern Washington University and began substitute teaching and coaching in the Medical Lake School District for several years. At the high school, Tricia coached the JV girls basketball team and the freshman volleyball team.

At the time of Tricia's induction into the MLHS Athletic Hall of Fame in 2014, she was in her tenth year as a teacher with the Head Start program in Leavenworth Washington where she worked to support the positive mental, social, and emotional development and well being of young pre-school aged children. Tricia made it known just prior to her induction into the Hall of Fame that undoubtedly her greatest accomplishment and joy has been the adoption and raising of sons, Collin and Avie. Tricia Nilles now joins her father Mike Nilles (2008 Inductee) into the Medical Lake High School Athletic Hall of Fame.

An outstanding athlete during high school, Greg was a three sport varsity letterman in football, basketball, and track, earning MVP honors for football more than once. After being selected for the First team All Frontier League as a running back, Greg was listed in Popular Sports Magazine as being among the top one hundred high school running backs in the nation. Besides playing football and basketball, Greg’s speed was quite evident during the track season, where, besides being the Team Captain he was Frontier League Champion in the low hurdles.  This qualified him for State, and he finished 2^nd in the Frontier League in the 100 yard dash.

Greg was Class Valedictorian and Senior Male Athlete of the Year in 1976. Voted First team All Frontier League both as an offensive running back and defensive back certainly caught the eye of coaches at the University of Montana in Missoula where Greg continued to shine. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration in 1980 with a GPA of 3.2 and was a member of Beta Alpha Psi.

While at the University of Montana he played in 40 consecutive football games earning First Team All Big Sky Conference as a defensive safety. He achieved Academic All Big Sky honors and was an Honorable Mention - All American in 1978. Similar honors followed in 1980 as he was again selected for the First Team All Big Sky Conference as a defensive safety, Second Team as a kick return specialist, Academic All Big Sky, Honorable Mention - All American, Football Team Captain, and Golden Helmet award winner.

Following graduation from the University of Montana, Greg was signed on by the Seattle Seahawks as a defensive back and later released on waivers.

At the time of his induction into the MLHS Hall of Fame in 2009, Greg was a Computer Consultant working in the San Francisco area with their public transit system.     

Tammy played softball, basketball, and volleyball every year during her high school career. A four year letterman in softball, three years in basketball and two in volleyball, Tammy was selected as Female Athlete of the Year her senior year. She was selected First Team All Conference in both softball and basketball her junior and senior years and also Second Team All Conference in volleyball both years. Second Team All Conference honors during her freshman and sophomore years resulted from her play in softball and basketball.

Besides her outstanding athletic high school career, Tammy was active in other areas as well. She graduated in the top 10% of her class academically, was voted Senior Class Vice – President and Senior Homecoming Queen.

Following high school, Tammy enrolled at Spokane Falls Community College and after attaining a two year degree transferred to Eastern Washington University where she earned her four year degree.

At the time of Tammy’s induction into the MLHS Hall of Fame in 2009, she worked in the Special Education Department at the Medical Lake Middle School and coached softball, volleyball, and track for twenty years. She coached the MLMS volleyball team in 2002 to an undefeated season. 

Jim played football, basketball and baseball every year while attending MLHS, adding track to that list his last two years. Jim batted 353 during the baseball season of 1963 and later received the “Football Coaches Award” that same year. He was Co-Captain of the Cardinal basketball team in 1963 and 64’ and as a member of the 1964 team that finished 2^nd in State, made the 2^nd All State Team. Jim was designated an Honorary Captain for the high school baseball team his senior year.

Following graduation from MLHS, Jim attended Seattle Pacific College (University) on a basketball scholarship. During his sophomore year there, his team made it to the NCAA Small College Regional Championships.

After receiving his BA in Education in 1969, Jim coached basketball at Northwest College (University) in Kirkland, Washington for four years. In 1972 Jim attended Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and graduated with a Master’s of Divinity degree in 1975. He began his ministry as Pastor for the Moscow Assembly of God Church in 1976 and served in that post until 1988. During this time he also enjoyed substitute teaching and coaching 9^th grade girls basketball.

After a temporary absence from the pastorate, Jim worked for the United States Department of Agriculture in the Farm Service Agency where he had worked part time previously during his college years. He returned to full time pastoral ministry in 2000 until his retirement in 2009.

Jim remained active in recreational activities such as hiking, golfing, swimming, cycling, triathlons, and particularly basketball throughout his life.

The joy of Jim’s life has been his three daughters and three grandchildren. “To continue to live for the Lord and share His life and love with those around me” remained a personal goal of Jim’s throughout his adulthood.   

Barbie (Goll) DeWitte  -  Class of 1980 

A stellar scholar athlete throughout all four years of high school, Barbie was active in many other areas as well. She served as her Freshman Class Secretary and Sophomore Class Vice – President in addition to being elected as ASB Vice – President. She was a member of the Windborne Singers, Wind Ensemble, National Honor Society, High School Band, Flag Corp, Foreign Language Club, and Frontier League Leadership Committee. Barbie also was Co-Editor of the MLHS Annual.

Barbie earned varsity letters in both volleyball and track, Barbie really excelled in basketball, playing at the varsity level all four years. She was selected Team Captain for three years and was a two time MVP. She earned All Frontier League Team honors her senior year and was the second leading scorer in league play her junior year and third leading scorer her senior year.

Following high school, Barbie earned her Bachelor of Science Degree in Visual Communications with emphasis in Graphic Design from Western Washington University in 1984. Putting her education to work, Barbie was self employed for many years as a Graphic designer in the Seattle and Ellensburg areas. Barbie began teaching at Ellensburg High School in 2000 and at the time of her induction into the MLHS Hall of Fame in 2009, Barbie was serving as an Administrator for Ellensburg H.S., handling the responsibilities of Activities Director and ASB Advisor while still teaching Leadership classes and being the proud mom of two teenage children.

A lifelong resident of Medical Lake, Gary attended MLHS from 1957 to graduation in 1961. Gary made the transition from the old high school which was built in the early 1900’s to the “new current school” between his junior and senior years. Gary was an outstanding athlete throughout his high school career. He lettered in baseball all four years and played on the District Championship Team in 1960. Football and basketball were also two sports that Gary participated in, lettering his sophomore, junior, and senior years as well.

Besides athletics, Gary was active within the Medical Lake High School Student Council. His senior year he was voted for having “Most School Spirit”.

Gary did not retire from community involvement however. For several years Gary served as the Medical Lake Lion’s Club President, Secretary, and as of 2009 continued to maintain his membership. For many years, Gary was a Medical Lake Volunteer Fireman and also drove the ambulance when the town had its’ own ambulance service. Gary served on the Civil Service Commission in Medical Lake for 8 years during the 1990’s.

Along with his wife, Marlene, Gary helped raise a son and daughter, both of whom graduated from MLHS.

James Lundgren  -  Class of 1964

A lifelong resident of Medical Lake and a 1964 graduate from MLHS, James Lundgren is entered into the Medical Lake High School Hall of Fame as an Honorary Inductee for his unwavering and longtime support and devotion to the Medical Lake School District.

During all of his four years of high school Jim was the Varsity Football Student Team manager. He also filled the role of Varsity Baseball Student Team Manager his junior and senior years.

After graduating from MLHS, Jim attended Washington State University for several years before joining the U.S. Army Reserves. He re-entered WSU in 1969 and graduated in 1970 with a degree in Music Education. Jim returned to the Medical Lake area and worked for the University of Washington Primate Center for two and a half years. In 1973, Jim was hired by the MLSD and became the High School Band Director and added the Band Directorship for the Middle School to his teaching responsibilities in 1978. He also coached varsity tennis for several years at MLHS.

Jim retired from the Medical Lake School District in 2003 after 30 years of dedicated and devoted service. Jim Lundgren was a constant presence at most all home and away athletic events, directing the band in support of the Medical Lake Cardinals.

At the time of his induction into the Hall of Fame in 2009, Jim still involved himself with Medical Lake students as a District School Bus Driver.

Mike Nilles - Class of 1956

An outstanding athlete while at Medical Lake High School, Mike was a four year letterman in baseball and basketball and a three year letterman in football. An MVP at least once in all three sports, Mike also earned All League honors three years running in baseball and two years in football and basketball. A star quarterback and co-captain for football at MLHS, Mike led the team with drive and determination. Mike was a member of the 1956 basketball team that set a new one game scoring record in Washington high school basketball play with a team score of 123 points. Mike was selected as a member of the 1^st Team All District basketball team his senior year. Elected class president his freshman year, Mike also served as Student Body President his junior year.

 Following high school Mike attended Eastern Washington State College and worked the mound in baseball and carried the ball as a tailback on the football team. Injuries sidelined Mike while in college ending his competitive athletic career.

 Mike was an active member of the Washington Air National Guard for fourteen years and has farmed in the Medical Lake area for thirty years raising four children in the process with his wife Linda.

 A great supporter of and fan of Medical Lake High School sports, Mike has watched his children play sports at MLHS and now enjoys watching his grandchildren attend and play sports at the same school he and his wife attended. 

Gary Glasgow - Class of 1964

Gary was a four year letterman in basketball and baseball, three year letterman in track and a two year letterman in football while at Medical Lake High School. An MVP and team captain in football, basketball, and baseball, Gary earned 2^nd Team All State in basketball his senior year.

 Following a stellar athletic high school career, Gary attended Eastern Washington State College in 1964 majoring in math and gaining his BA in Education in 1968. Gary achieved his Master’s degree in Administration in 1975. While at EWSC Gary played baseball for four years, starting in every game he played. He was an All Evergreen Conference player all four years and was an Honorable Mention All American player year. Gary also played three years of basketball at EWSC.

 After college Gary became a teacher at Toutle Lake H.S. and was their head basketball and baseball coach from while there from 1968-71. Returning to MLHS Gary taught here from 1971 until his retirement in 1998. During that time Gary coached baseball for twenty seven years. He also coached football and boys and girls basketball for several years. Gary served as the Athletic Director at MLHS from 1995-98.

Dana Jensen - Class of 1964

Besides his interest and participation in varsity sports at MLHS, Dana was active in other school activities as well.

Growing up and working on the family farm, Dana was naturally very active in the MLHS chapter of the Future Farmers of America. He served as FFA President in 1964 along with being a member of the Dairy Judging Team. He was a member of the Parliamentary Procedure Club and served as a Junior Class Officer in 1963.

An excerpt from his mothers’ memoirs about Dana reads, “Dana – our oldest son, was so much help to us on the farm. He would try “anything” – sometimes it just didn’t work out – you might say he was the one his younger brother’s “learned” from – what to do and what not to do! They learned from his mistakes. He loved a challenge and always did his best”.

Dana fulfilled his youthful dreams of becoming a deep sea diver upon entering the US Navy in 1965. He became a casualty of the Vietnam War on April 17, 1969 leaving behind a wife and two children.

In honor of the men and women of the armed services of the United States who served in the Vietnam War, the names of those who gave their lives and those who remain missing are forever inscribed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, DC.

 We now humbly honor the name Dana Bruce Jensen here in the halls of Medical Lake High School.

Dannie Turnbough - Class of 1966

Dannie enjoyed his high school years. He had many friends. John Jensen was among his very best. Dannie was a three year letterman in wrestling and assuredly influenced John to wrestle during their remaining two high school years together. Dannie, in turn, followed John’s footsteps and joined the Cardinal football team his senior year. They were in the same class. They grew up together, worked together and were like adopted brothers to each other. Immediately after high school they joined the United States Marine Corp together. They died in the service of their country during the Vietnam conflict, two days apart from each other.

Dannie entered the United States Marine Corp in July, 1966. He became a casualty of the Vietnam War on August 29, 1967.

 Our nation honors the courage, sacrifice, and devotion to duty and country of its Vietnam veterans. In honor of the men and women of the armed forces of the United States who served in the Vietnam War, the names of those who gave their lives and those who remain missing are forever inscribed on the Vietnam Memorial in Washington, DC.

We now humbly honor the name Charles Dannie Turnbough here in the halls of Medical Lake High School.

John Jensen – Class of 1966

While attending MLHS, John participated in varsity football for several years and earned “Lineman of the Year Award” in 1965. Following the football seasons, John participated and lettered in wrestling.

John had other interests while in school and managed to participate in other school activities while still competing in varsity sports. In 1963 he was a Freshman Class Officer. In 1964 he was a member of the MLHS chapter of the Future Farmers of America and was on the Dairy Judging Team. In 1965 John was a Junior Class Officer, Vice President of the FFA and a Dairy Judging Team member. During his senior year John was the FFA President and member of the Livestock Judging Team.

An excerpt from John’s mothers’ memoirs reads, “Johnny, our middle son was easy going – a wonderful help to us on the farm also. In fact, that was the happiest time of our life when we all lived together and worked together on the farm – each of the boys learned how to work, each had a tractor to take care of and use and each had a horse to love. Johnny loved sports and took an active part. He was dependable and kind – I’m so thankful we all had that “time” together”.

Neal Sealock - Class of 1970

Neal participated in football, wrestling, and baseball all four years while attending MLHS, earning varsity letters twice in football and three times each in wrestling and baseball. In the winter of 1969-70 Neal earned a berth at the State Wrestling Tournament. Neal was the MVP for baseball in 1970. Besides staying busy with athletics, Neal was a member of the National Honor Society and began to display his outstanding leadership qualities through his involvement in student government. Neal was very active in MLHS Student Council activities and served as the Associated Student Body President his senior year.

Neal enrolled at Eastern Washington State College during the early 1970’s and through the ROTC program earned his Bachelor’s degree in Military Science along with his private pilot’s license in 1974. Neal was recognized as Eastern Washington State University’s Distinguished Alumnus for 2003. Neal received his Master’s degree in International Relations from Troy University in 1985.

Neal became a Commissioned Officer in the United States Army in 1974. He attended a variety of military schools and rose steadily through the ranks, culminating in his promotion to Brigadier General on Jan. 1, 2002. Neal has received over a dozen military awards and honors for meritorious service during his long and distinguished military career.

Neal has spent his life serving our country through distinguished service to thousands of soldiers and a myriad of organizations. Besides serving at many U.S. Army Posts throughout the United States, his assignments have taken him and his wife Donna (MLHS Class of 1970) around the globe and he has served in virtually every level of command responsibility in the U.S. Army. Neal culminated his Army career as the Deputy Commanding General, U.S. Army Cadet Command, Ft. Monroe, Virginia in 2005. Neal became the Director of Spokane International Airport in December 2005.

Ron Dittemore - Class of 1970

Ron lettered in football, wrestling, track, and tennis during his four years at MLHS. Elected Captain of the wrestling team his senior year, Ron achieved 2^nd in Sub-district and 3^rd in Bi-district. Ron was named MLHS Male Athlete of the Year in 1970.

After graduating from Medical Lake High School in 1970, Ron attended the University of Washington and received his Bachelor’s degree in aeronautical and astronautical engineering in 1974. He received a Master’s degree in the same subjects one year later.

Before joining NASA at the Johnson Space center in 1977, Ron worked as a turboprop / turbofan engine development engineer in Arizona. While at the Johnson Space Center, Ron held several positions, including Flight Director on 11 shuttle missions, Deputy Assistant Director of the Space Station Program and Manager of the Space Shuttle Program Integration. He assumed the position of Manager of the Space Shuttle Program in 1999.

Ron left NASA in 2003 and currently is President of ATK Launch Systems Group of Brigham City, Utah. ATK (Alliant Techsystems) was selected in 2005 as the prime contractor for the first stage of NASA’s Ares 1.

Sally Chapman (McCarthy) - Class of 1979

A four year letterman in basketball and track, Sally also lettered in volleyball and cross country while attending Medical Lake High School. Besides lettering all four years in track, Sally earned track MVP honors each of those four years. She was Most Inspirational Player in basketball her freshman year and named Female Athlete of the Year in 1979. Not only being an outstanding athlete, Sally was an Academic Honor Society member throughout high school.

Sally continued as a student / athlete after entering the University of Oklahoma in 1979. En route to earning her Bachelor’s degree in Education in 1983, Sally was the BIG 8 Conference Champion in the high jump (6’0) in 1980. In 1981 she placed 6^th in the A1AW Nationals (6’0) and 2^nd at the BIG 8 Indoor Championships. She placed 4^th at the BIG 8 Indoor Championships in 1982. Sally has a career best high jump of 6’1 ¼”. As in high school, Sally’s concentration wasn’t solely on athletics. She found her name on the Dean’s List more than once with a 4.0 grade average. 

Sally has two grown children and currently is a business woman in the Yakima Valley, where she continues on the path she has followed for over thirty years in pursuit of fitness and wellness. She has coached, volunteered, and officiated track and field in the Yakima Valley for many years. She has competed at the Master’s level in track and field for three years.

Lennie Parham - Class of 1983

A four year letterman at Medical Lake High School in track, a three year letterman in basketball, and a two year letterman in football, Lennie was a superb all around athlete and a joy to watch. He earned 1^st team All Frontier League honors in basketball in 1982 and again in 1983 along with being the league’s MVP that same year. Lennie was also his teams MVP and Captain his senior year. At the conclusion of his last year of high school basketball Lennie had reached career highs of over 1,000 points and 1,000 rebounds.

Following graduation from MLHS in 1983, Lennie attended Spokane Community College and was a two year starter for the men’s basketball team. He was named Team Captain and MVP in 1985. The SCC team captured the league championship that year with a 15-0 league record. Lennie then enrolled at Gonzaga University and was a member of the Bulldogs men’s basketball team for two years.

Lennie coached at the college level from 1988 to 2001. From 2001 to 2005 he was a Physical Education teacher and Head Basketball Coach at Plainfield H.S. in New Jersey. Lennie currently is Director of Athletics at Dumont High School in Dumont, NJ.

Lori Napier - Class of 1991 

A four year letterman in softball, basketball and band, Lori also participated and lettered in soccer and cross country. As a freshman, Lori earned 2^nd team All League honors in both softball and basketball. She advanced her sophomore year by attaining 1^st Team All League status in softball and basketball along with being the League MVP in softball. Selection to the 1^st team All League teams in softball, basketball, and soccer followed during her third year. Athletic and academic accomplishments followed throughout her senior year. She was 1^st Team All League, League MVP, and All State in softball followed by 1^st Team All League, League MVP, All State in basketball. She was 2^nd Team All League in soccer, a Spokesman-Review Athlete of the Week, US Army Reserve Scholar Athlete, MLHS Female Athlete of the Year for 1991, and was her senior Class Salutatorian.

Following high school, Lori attended Eastern Washington University where she received her BA in Psychology. While playing basketball at EWU she was a four time Academic All-Conference selection. Being named to All Tournament Teams was not uncommon for Lori. She attained these distinctions while competing in tournaments at the University of Kansas, BYU, Wisconsin – Green Bay, and also the Big Sky Conference Tournament. In 1994-95 Lori was named 1^st Team All Big Sky Conference, Conference Athlete of the Week, Big Sky Conference EWU Scholar Athlete of the Year.

Lori received her Master’s degree in Sport Psychology from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. She was an Assistant Coach at Whitworth College for three years, Interim Head Coach at Whitman College for a year, Assistant Coach for two years at Spokane Falls Community College and currently and for the last five years is coaching at Northwest University in Kirkland, Washington.
