MLHS Fall Video Newsletter

Dear Parents and Guardians,

We are writing to share important information about your student's attendance and kindly ask for your partnership with this item.

For the sake of consistency, the following list represents common attendance codes that will appear on your student's attendance report:

  • E-PR- Excused at parent request
  • E-IL- Excused at parent request due to student illness
  • E-AP- Excused at parent request due to student medical appointment
  • "W"- Student was marked absent in class and the absence has not been reconciled.
    • Parents/Guardians of students with 1 or more "W(s)" on their daily attendance report will receive school messenger phone call communicating your student's absence from one or more class periods.
    • Parents/Guardians have 48 hours to clear the absence(s).
  • "U-PR" or "U-IL" Unexcused- Parent Request or Unexcused-Student Illness
    • Parent contacted school to excuse absence; however, absence not excused because of illegitimate reasons and/or parent/guardian missed 48-hour window.
    • Illegitimate reasons could include missing the bus, sleeping late, skipping school, long lunches, getting coffee etc.......If your student is marked absent for 1 or more periods, you will receive notice that evening by way of school messenger of such absence(s). Upon receiving that notice, our attendance policy states that the parent/guardian has 48 hours to call-in or provide documentation to the main office to excuse. If an absence is not excused, truancy discipline will be assigned accordingly. Here is what truancy discipline looks like at MLHS:
    •
  • Scenario 1: Student has 1 unexcused absent period- If not excused in 48 hours, student assigned 1 lunch detention the following day after the 48-hour window.
  • Scenario 2: Student has 2 unexcused absent periods in the same day- If not excused in 48 hours, student assigned 2 lunch detentions for the following 2 consecutive school days after the 48-hour window.
  • Scenario 3:  Student has 3 or more unexcused absent periods in the same day- If not excused in 48 hours, student assigned 1  after-school-detention from 2:30-4:30 as assigned. From this day forward, in order to maximize the procedures and processes of the attendance policy and the employees that ensure its accuracy, if a student does not have an unexcused absence cleared within the 48-hour window, they will be assigned truancy discipline and such discipline will not be waived. If a parent calls in beyond the 48-hour window to excuse an absence, the absence itself will be coded as "U-PR" which stands for unexcused parent request but the student will be still be responsible for serving the assigned truancy discipline. We appreciate your time and hope that our efforts to be on the same page will be successful. Our number one goal with this policy is to hold students accountable for coming to school.
